Why Is It So Hard to Get Back into Crafting?
I miss crafting, so I reinstalled Instagram to check out the crafters who started around the same time as me.
One of them is still very active. And her level of activity is exactly the same as it was 12 years ago. Meanwhile, I’ve slowed down a lot.
I feel a little jealous of how consistent and focused she is. Why can’t I be like that?
Actually, I already know the answer.
Because I’m a mom now. That’s it. My priority in life is my family.
But now that my kids are in school, I actually have time to craft in the mornings and at night. The problem is, I’m not disciplined enough to do it regularly.
I craft for a bit, then stop. Craft for a bit, then stop again.
Maybe I’ve just lost my momentum.
But earlier, I think I may have figured out the main reason (maybe).
It’s because I moved house, and in my new home, I don’t have a proper workspace.
I keep all my craft supplies in a box and take them out whenever I want to craft. I can work on the carpet, at the shared study desk, or at the dining table. Then I have to pack everything away. Take it all out again. Pack it all away again.
Eventually, I just can’t be bothered to take everything out because I’ll have to put it all away again soon anyway. I can’t just pick up where I left off. I have to unpack everything first.
I think that extra hassle is what makes crafting feel like such a chore.
In my previous homes, I always had a dedicated craft room where I could focus on my work. I could leave my work on the desk if it wasn’t finished, then come back to it later. I could keep stopping and resuming until the project was done.
So, when the kids were asleep, all I had to do was walk into my craft room, and everything was already in its place, ready for me to continue. And when I got sleepy, I could just go straight to bed without having to tidy everything up.
I’m not sure if this is just an excuse or the actual reason. I guess I’ll have to try it and see.
Earlier, I looked around the house and decided to set up a workspace in my bedroom. I’ve found an adjustable desk with wheels, and inshaAllah, I’ll order it tomorrow morning.
