Dumbphone

Read in BM

I actually used to own a dumbphone. You know, those old-school phones with absolutely no internet. Back then, I was determined to quit social media.

On the first day of using it, things did not go well. I was probably experiencing withdrawal symptoms. By the third day, it still wasn't working out. Eventually, I switched right back to a smartphone.

Why didn't it work?

First of all, there was no QR scanner. So many restaurants nowadays require you to scan a QR code just to order food. Even some offices use QR codes for registration and taking queue numbers.

Secondly, there was no map. Back in the day, finding places was easy. If you got lost, you could just ask anyone by the roadside. But these days, you can't even pull over by the side of the road safely, and there’s usually no one around to ask anyway. Even if you do find someone, they probably wouldn't know either because they rely on their own phone maps!

Thirdly, paying via QR. I usually prefer using card payments, but many small shops don't accept cards—they only use QR. Without a smartphone, scanning a QR code is simply impossible.

I think those three reasons alone are enough to prove that a dumbphone just isn't for me.

Anyway, I’ve now removed all social media apps from my phone. I even hid YouTube inside a folder so it stays out of sight.

My latest hobby is building that site on Neocities. It’s so much fun that I honestly don't want to stop!
